Hedrick, just a sophomore, returned to the championship match she lost a year ago and battled back from a set down to defeat Carmel freshman Courtney Wild in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Hedrick won eight straight tournament matches to finish 25-0 in 2008. As a freshman last year, she went unbeaten the entire season before falling in straight sets in the final match.

She is the first Columbus North student to win a tennis state title.

Ashby and Perez-Majul, both seniors, won their ninth postseason match with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 championship match victory over Elizabeth Emhardt and Heather Rogers of Park Tudor. Ashby and Perez-Majul (23-0) became the sixth North Central doubles team to capture the title. The pair had lost in last year’s semifinal round to the eventual state champions.

Emhardt and Rogers were fresh off helping No. 1 Park Tudor capture its fourth consecutive state championship in team tennis May 31.

In Saturday morning’s semifinals, Hedrick outlasted Munster junior Mary Hill in a marathon three-setter. The match lasted three hours and 25 minutes before Hedrick took a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 6-4 decision. It was Hill’s first loss of her high school career in 79 matches. Wild also won a three-set match, beating Avon junior Christina Riley, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) in a match that went two hours and 42 minutes. It was also the first setback of the year in 24 matches for Riley.

In the doubles semis, Ashby and Perez-Majul put away Concord seniors Amy Kline and Andrea Moore, 6-0, 6-1, while Emhardt and Rogers, both seniors, defeated West Lafayette juniors Elizabeth Bremer and Madison Leslie, 6-3, 6-1.

Due to rain, Saturday’s semifinal and championship rounds were moved from North Central High School to Five Seasons Sports Club.
