The victorious South squad.
From the ICGSA’s Bruce FlemingThe South team dominated play at the 10th Annual Senior North-South Tennis All-Star Event held June 8 at the University of Indianapolis Tennis Center, rolling to a 16-7 win to take back the Cup from the North. The tournament, sponsored by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, featured standout players from across the state in both singles and doubles.
It was a fun-packed day full of competition and new friendships, highlighted by honoring these talented athletes at the conclusion of the day’s matches. That ceremony included the awarding of the ICGSA Tennis Scholarship, which encourages young women to offer leadership beyond the tennis court, to Benton Central’s Chelsey Bolin.
Also earning awards were Zionsville’s Pat Slama, named Coach of the Year, and the following District Coaches of the Year: Tim Wright (West Lafayette, District 1), Jerry Gerig (Fort Wayne Canterbury, District 2), Slama (Zionsville, District 3), Matt DeVault (Alexandria, District 4), and Kelly Watson (Castle, District 5).
Coaching the victorious South squad was Dan McNally of Indianapolis Chatard, Kendal Hammel of Columbus North, and Paoli’s Tyla Wells. The North was coached by Canterbury’s Gerig as well as Bob Modesto of state runner-up Munster.
