Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern rallied Oct. 4 to capture the team title by 10 shots at the 36th Annual IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals, while Richmond sophomore Trisha Witherby held off Noblesville senior Emily Podzielinski by a single stroke for the individual crown at The Legends of Indiana.
The Royals, who posted a 27-over/315 Friday to sit in third place 10 shots behind Round 1 leader No. 6 Richmond, fared three shots lower at +24/311 today to finish with a total of 627. Richmond, 17-over yesterday, added 27 strokes in going +44 Saturday. The Red Devils finished four shots ahead of third-place No. 5 Columbus North (313-328–641) and six ahead of third-ranked Roncalli (315-328–641).
Defending state champion No. 2 Martinsville, meanwhile, finished 17 shots off the pace in fifth with a 325-319–644.
Individually, Witherby followed up her state finals-record -6 effort from Friday with a 5-over 77 today to finish 1-under at 143. That was good enough to barely hold off the late-charging Podzielinski (75-69–144), whose 3-under on Saturday was five strokes better than anyone else in the 56-player Round 2 field.
Avon senior Breanna Patz (73-74–147) finished third at +3, one shot better than Columbus North junior Taylor Gohn (72-76–148). Kokomo senior Kristi Cardwell (70-79–149) and Martinsville senior Carleigh Silvers (74-75–149) tied for fifth.
