Second-ranked Franklin Community fell to No. 5 Center Grove in the second meeting of the teams this season. The Grizzly Cubs and Trojans fought through a tough five-game match, with momentum shifts on both sides. The storied rivalry between the teams was tangible as the match drew to the final game of the night, when the Trojans were able to defeat the Cubs 15-8 for the win. FCHS (12-5) was led by Conoley (OH) with 14 kills, Nicodemus (S) with 33 assists, and Gabehart (M) with three blocks, 15 digs, and 15 kills.

Summary (thank you, Cathedral coach Rhonda Low!):
Top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral won the Center Grove Tournament by sweeping Southport, St. Xavier (KY), and No. 9 Carmel in pool play before downing fourth-ranked host Center Grove in two games for the title. Against Southport, Tommy Rouse served 18 straight points in the first game while Patrick O’Connor added 13 kills (hitting .524). Against St. Xavier, Kevin Owens hit a .562 (eight kills) while Tyler McClure led the offense with 25 assists. Against Carmel, Will Brady led the defense with six digs while McClure continued setting the offense with 20 assists.

The championship match pitted the Irish against metro rival Center Grove, and the Fighting Irish continued their season-long winning streak by beating the Trojans 25-23, 25-11. O’Connor led the attack with eight kills (hitting .333), Owens added four kills (hitting .250), and Rob Schick had three kills (hitting .428). McClure continued setting the attack with 20 assists, while Rouse and Brady had 15 digs and seven digs, respectively.

Despite “Parent Recognition Night,” however, the host Grizzly Cubs were defeated by Center Grove in four games. The Trojans used a commanding lead to win Game 1 before the teams battled back and forth with the Trojans just edging the Cubs in Game 2, 28-26. Franklin (14-7) then defeated Center Grove 25-15 to set up an exciting Game 4, which was won 29-27 by Center Grove to clinch it. In the JV match, Franklin lost in an exciting three-game set.

The fourth-ranked Grizzly Cubs soundly defeated Southport and host Zionsville to set up the season’s first meeting with No. 8 Wheeler. The match started as a down-to-the-wire affair as the Cubs won Game 1 by just two points. The Cubs started Game 2 super-hot with a 8-2 run, but the Bearcats clawed back into it before Franklin rode the surge to win, 25-18. Leading the way for Franklin was Gabehart (32 kills), Nicodemus (80 assists, six aces), Conoley (24 kills), Coffman (six blocks), and Calvert (15 digs).
