Of the 14 players named to
The Indianapolis Star 2008 Indiana All-Star team, half will be attending college within the state’s borders. Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller of Class 3A state champion Washington, of course, will not be among them.
That’s because the standout 7-footer is bound for the University of North Carolina, one of two All-Stars who will be playing on Tobacco Road (Marion’s Julius Mays being the other).
The other All-Stars heading out of state to play college ball are New Albany’s Braydon Hobbs (Bellarmine), Evansville Memorial’s Kyle Kuric (Louisville), Brownsburg’s Julian Mavunga (Miami, Ohio), Chesterton’s Zack Novak (Michigan), and Warren Central’s Walter Offutt (Ohio State).
That still leaves a fair amount of talent to stick around the neighborhood, so to speak. Three of the seven – Edgewood’s Garrett Butcher, Brownsburg’s Gordon Hayward, and New Castle’s Chase Stigall – are headed to Hinkle Fieldhouse and Butler University.
The Indianapolis duo of Larry Stone (Indianapolis Howe Academy) and Alex Young (Indianapolis Northwest), meanwhile, is headed to IUPUI. Plymouth’s Randy Davis will play for Ball State, and Carmel’s Daniel Moore is one of Indiana University coach Tom Crean’s first recruits.
The 14-member team will be coached by Muncie South’s Rick Baumgartner, whose assistants are John Boyd (Gary West) and Kevin Oxley (Tecumseh). The Indiana All-Stars will play Kentucky in a home-and-home series in June.
“We have a lot of perimeter players because that’s where we felt the strength was in the group,” Baumgartner told the
Star. “We also have a lot of versatility and a lot of depth, and we’re going to need depth because, including the two Junior exhibitions, we will play four games in seven days.”
