Brittany Rayburn, the 6-foot high-scoring guard from Attica, has been named The Indianapolis Star’s 2008 Indiana Miss Basketball. The Purdue recruit received 119 of 309 votes cast statewide by coaches and media.

Briana Bass of North Central (Indianapolis) finished second with 47 votes, with Lebanon’s Maggie Boyer and Danielle Havel of Class 4A state champion Carmel tying for third with 15 each. Forty-one players earned at least one vote.

Rayburn was the state’s second-leading scorer at 28.7 points a game and averaged 8.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. She led the Red Ramblers to 70 wins and three sectional crowns in four seasons.

Since the Miss Basketball honor began being awarded in 1976, Rayburn is only the second winner from a 1A school. Jennifer Jacoby of Rossville won in 1991 during the non-class era. Seven winners, meanwhile, have come from schools that are now classified 2A.

Rayburn will be the seventh Miss Basketball to play for Purdue, which is coached by Mishawaka’s 1984 Miss Basketball Sharon Versyp. Rayburn, who ranks third in her class with a 3.92 GPA, plans to study pre-veterinary medicine.
