BT&F Midwest Meet of Champions: Indiana boys, girls both place third

JACKSON, Mich. – The Indiana All-Star track & field teams both placed third June 13 at the Midwest Meet of Champions held at Jackson High School in Michigan. The teams, comprised mostly of the top seniors at last weekend's IHSAA state finals, competed against similar all-star teams from Ohio and Michigan.
 
The team is selected and sponsored by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.

State champions Matt Terrell (100 meters) of Ben Davis and Derrick Spight (high jump) of Warren Central won their respective events to lead the Indiana boys team, which scored 133.5 points to finish behind Michigan (171.5) and Ohio (168). The other Hoosier boys winners were McCutcheon's Al Escalera (3200 meters) and Lawrence Central’s Zach Saunders (pole vault).
 
 “It was pretty exciting to face such good competition,” Spight said. “I came in with the mindset of winning. I was disappointed that I didn't jump better, but I’ll just settle for the gold medal.”
 
Spight entered the meet with a personal best leap of 7-01 and was one of two performers to top the 7-foot barrier. In fact, eight of the nine competitors had cleared at least 6-10.
 
Escalera credited the competition for paving the way to his victory and five-second personal best run of 9 minutes, 11 seconds in the 3200.
 
“I didn’t want to lead, and with this field I didn’t have to,” said Escalera, who raced to victory with a 63-second final lap in winning by nearly four seconds. “I just sat back and made sure I was still in contact with the leaders.”

Kyla Buckley of North Central (Indianapolis) won the shot put and was the only Indiana girl to claim an event. Ohio won the girls meet with 223 points, with Michigan was second with 173 and Indiana third at 75.
 
“It was just great representing my state,” said Buckley, who will attend the University of Miami (Fla.).
