Announcement: Stone Bridge Dominates Robinson, 49-7
Posted: 09/13/2008
The Stone Bridge Bulldogs gave visiting Robinson a healthy dose of payback Friday night, avenging their only loss of the 2007 season with a resounding 49-7 thumping of the Rams. The Bulldogs controlled every aspect of the game and showed themselves to be every bit the dominating team most prognosticators saw them as.
Robinson kicked off to start the game, and Marcus Harris put the Bulldogs in great position with a 49 yard return to the Rams 46. Patrick Thompson hit brother Zach with a key 12 yard pass and Daniel Allen added an 11 yard rush to put Stone Bridge in striking distance at the 14. A roughing the passer call gave the Bulldogs first and goal on the 6, and two plays later Thompson dove in for the touchdown. Abdul Shaban added the PAT and Stone Bridge was on the board first 7-0.
Robinson fumbled the first snap and could not get in gear after that, going three and out in their first series. Stone Bridge took over at the Rams 42, and Allen carried most of the load, rushing six times for 24 yards before jamming in from the one for his first TD. Another Shaban extra point made it 14-0 Stone Bridge.
Robinson quarterback Timmy Meier found Wynton Fox for 17 yards to open the series, but that was the extent of the threat. A huge punt by Meier pinned Stone Bridge back at its own 7, and the Rams then enjoyed, for them, the only positive 30 seconds of the game. On first down, Patrick Thompson lofted a pass down the left sideline that was picked off at the Bulldog 41. Two plays later Meier found Xavier Duncan behind the Stone Bridge secondary for a touchdown. With the PAT the Rams were back in the game 14-7.
The Stone Bridge offense got down to business, starting with an 18 yard strike from Thompson to John Bladel. Another ten yard pass to Zach Thompson brought the Bulldogs to midfield, and from there it was Patrick Thompson and Allen pounding it on the ground. With 6:28 left in the half, Thompson burst in from the six, and Stone Bridge was on top 21-7.
Robinson could not muster a first down, and the Bulldogs again had great field position near midfield following the punt. On fourth and four, Allen took the direct snap and scampered 37 yards to pay dirt. Tack on another Shaban extra point, and it was becoming clear that Stone Bridge was having their way.
The Rams went without a first down yet again, and the Bulldogs drove to the Robinson 25, but a 37 yard field goal attempt was wide left just before the end of the half.
The second half saw Robinson receiving the kick off, but after a 22 yard completion, the Rams moved backwards and were forced to punt. Stone Bridge began on its own 42, and three plays later Thompson hooked up with Michael Prince down the right sideline, but Prince was tackled at the one. Thompson finished the job, scoring his third touchdown of the night and giving the Bulldogs a 35-7 lead.
On the first play of the Rams possession, Meier was swarmed and fumbled but Fox recovered at the Robinson nine. On the next play, Meier attempted to hit a receiver deep down the right sideline but the pass was picked off by Spenser Rositano with a leaping catch at the Ram 42. A pass interference call pushed the ball to the Ram 27, and completions of 14 and 15 yards gave Stone Bridge first and goal at the three. Three plays later Allen tallied his third TD of the night to set the Bulldogs in front 42-7.
Robinson came up empty once more, and Stone Bridge took over at the Bulldog 38. With 7:51 left in the game, Prince zipped through a seam on a counter play and sprinted 35 yards for the game final touchdown. Shabans seventh kick made the score 49-7 and the rout was complete.
A running clock managed to finish off the game without any further fireworks, but the statement had been made. Rather than look like a grudge match, the Bulldogs simply seemed to chew up the Rams in a machine-like fashion. Aside from one touchdown in blown coverage, Robinson could not dent the Bulldogs defense, recording only two first downs for the evening. On offense, Stone Bridge was balanced and methodical, with 457 yards (241 rushing, 216 passing), 21 first downs and no punts.
Stone Bridge opens the defense of its Liberty District title next week against Marshall. The Bulldogs have yet to lose a district game since joining the league three years ago, compiling a 21-0 record.
