Announcement: Black River Ladies clinch Invitational Tournament
Posted: 09/14/2008
The Black River Presidents entered the final round game of the Black River Invitational Tournament meeting a determined Green Mountain Lady Chieftain squad. Both teams were undefeated and the Presidents were just as determined playing before a large hometown crowd. The Chieftains began the game strong on attack controlling the ball on the Black River defensive end of the field. Black River defenders Tina Valente, Amanda Chambers, Katie ONeil, Sarah Hawkins and goalkeeper Zoe Trimboli thwarted the early pressure. Sarah Hawkins drew the assignment of marking Green Mountains dangerous attacking left winger Alaina Savage and proved equal to the task. It would be Black River that would strike first blood scoring on a Hannah Josselyn to Courtney Rohrig connection. The goal ignited the Black River attack as the momentum shifted and Rohrig returned the favor setting up Josselyn for a 2 0 lead. Although the lead would hold up for halftime, Green Mt. would hit the cross bar late in the half on a direct kick from outside the box only to have it smothered up by Trimboli in a crowd of players.
Forewarned at halftime that the Lady Chieftains would continue to apply pressure the second half the Presidents defense stood its ground. Eventually Gr. Mt. striker Chelsea Hawkins would capitalize on a rare Zoe Trimboli mistake as she knocked in a ball that bounced off the Black River keeper. The goal prompted Black River to make some defensive shifts, inserting freshman Rachel Brzoza in to the midfield, moving Tina Valente to sweeper and dropping Kit Kat Thompson back to defensive stopper. The move paid dividends as Black River was able to balance out the attack. With less than 15 minutes to go Rohrig and Josselyn took over the show. First Hannah played a ball through for Coutney, who finished with a 20 yard rocket that blazed through Gr. Mt. goalie Morgan Solomons grasp. Then Rohrig returned the favor by centering a great chip into the box that Josselyn climbed for and nodded passed the keeper. As timekeeper Senor Bostock counted down the last few seconds the Presidents celebrated clinching the championship of 2008 Black River Invitational Tournament.
The win gives the Preidents a 5 0 record, and along with the defensive efforts and the offensive punch of Rohrig and Josselyn, midfielders Destiny Cucullo, Renee Seyller and Sandy Roundy also turned in solid performances. This years tournament was sponsored by Cota & Cota, TPW Property Management, Tony Ciufo Builders, Okemo Mt. And BRACC. Ms. Kerry Ann McQuaide sang the National Anthem both evenings of the tournament.
