It took the Black River Boy''s Varsity soccer team 89 minutes and 35 seconds to seal a victory over a tough Bellows Falls Terrier squad in the opening round of the Josh Cole Memorial Tournament. Twenty five seconds remained on the clock of the first overtime period when Kippie Turco jumped to head a Kyle Ehler''s deflection. From five yards away from the goal line the ball sailed between the outstretched arms of the Bellows Falls keeper who had proven to be impenatrable throughout the game. Tired legs were the story late into the game as both teams battled through 80 minutes of hard, fast paced soccer.
Just minutes into the game Black River was awarded a penalty kick when fleet footed Johnny Durgin was tripped in the penalty box. Although Kyle Ehlers'' penalty strike went wide ot the goal it did not deter the Black River offense as they rallied for many good offensive shots only to be denied by the stingy Bellows Falls defense. throughout the first half. Black River continued to apply pressure early in the second half but repeatedly came up short. Shots by Ehlers, Durgin and Jacob Covell missed the mark high or wide. Late in the second half Bellows Falls would counter several times after being buried in their defensive end only to be denied by Black River defenders Jay Gibbs, Joel Lombard, Andrew Valente and Victor Cucullo. Black River goalkeeper, Chris Kowalski, would be called on to make several saves as Bellows Falls attackers were aable to get a few good looks at the goal.
As the game went into overtime it was the tireless efforts of Black River midfielders James Greenwood, Kippie Turco, Cody Normyle and Jake Covell that applied pressure to the B.F. defense. Ultimately their hard work paid off with Turco''s goal. The "golden goal" gave the President''s the win and passage through to the finals against Green Mountain who defefeated Leland & Gray in the opener.
