Boys’ Soccer Top 10
*Rankings and records as of May 11
1. Westfield (12-1-0) — LW: 3
The
Bulldogs earned the top seed — and a first-round bye — in the Concorde District tournament. That, coupled with four days of rain last week, kept Westfield off the pitch. But its 12-1-0 record stands the best in the DC area and allows it to hop into the top spot. Westfield faces Centreville (5-4-2) in the district semifinals on Wednesday.
2. Osbourn Park (9-1-1) — LW: 1
The
Yellow
Jackets have outscored their opponents 31-5 this season, the fewest goals
allowed among any team in the DigitalSports coverage
area, but they fell to rival Osbourn, 2-1, in their only action this week. Osbourn Park faces No. 4 Battlefield, Loudoun Valley and Fauquier this week.
3. Robinson (10-1-2) — LW: 4
The
Rams beat Fairfax 4-0 in the first round of the Concorde District Tournament after a less-than-stellar 1-0 win over the Rebels in their regular-season final. Robinson faces Cinderella Oakton, the district sixth seed of seven teams in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.
4. Battlefield (10-1-2) — LW: 2
The
Bobcats posted an impressive, 2-1 win over Osbourn last week, but also suffered an inexplicable 3-2 loss to Loudon Valley. Battlefield rebounded with a 2-1 win over Stonewall, but faces No. 2 Osbourn Park before the Cedar Run District Tournament starts on May 18.
5. McLean (9-2-1) — LW: 5
The
Highlanders’
two
losses are to No. 3 Westfield, 5-2
on March 23, and
No. 10 Wakefield, 4-2 on March 12. McLean earned the top seed in the Liberty District Tournament and beat eighth-seeded Marshall, 1-0, in its only game last week. It faces Jefferson, who it beat 1-0 on April 14, in the district semifinals on Wednesday.
6. South County (10-1-1) — LW: 7
The Stallions continues their climb after earning the top seed in the Patriot District Tournament and beating eight-seed T.C. Williams, 7-0, in the tournament opener on Monday. South County faces Annandale (6-5-3) in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Stallions beat the Atoms, 1-0, on March 31.
7. Woodbridge (8-2-3) — LW: 6
The Vikings beat Freedom-Woodbridge, 3-1, in their only game last week. Woodbridge faces Potomac (2-5-1) and C.D. Hylton (1-5-2) before the Cardinal District Tournament starts on May 18.
8. Stone Bridge (11-1-1) — LW: 8
The
Bulldogs
have the third-best scoring defense in the Northern Region (Robinson
and South County) and have an eight-match unbeaten streak. Stone Bridge beat Marshall, 3-1; South Lakes, 2-1; and Woodson, 3-1, last week — the last of which was a first-round playoff game. It faces Langley (8-2-2) in a promising Liberty District semifinal on Wednesday.
9. Wakefield (11-1-2) — LW: 10
The Warriors opened eyes around the Northern Region with their 5-1
dismantling over the previously unbeaten — and previously fifth-ranked
— Eagles on on April 24, and have just recently regained their form. Wakefield beat Herndon, 2-0 on Senior Night, and Hayfield, 1-0, last week. It earned a first-round National District Tournament bye and draws Yorktown (6-6-3) in semifinals on Wednesday. The Warriors are the second-highest scoring team in the Northern Region (Westfield).
10. Gar-Field (6-1-4) — LW: N/A
The Indians had a pair of ties last week with Forest Park, but also beat Freedom-Woodbridge, 3-1. Only a Tuesday-night game with Hylton remains on Gar-Field’s regular-season schedule and it is the top team in the Cardinal District.
