Honorable Mentions (in no order):
That’s ‘Ji
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C.
In the W.C.A.C. championship game, DeMatha trailed Gonzaga by one point
with 9.9 seconds remaining. But the Stags went the length of the court
and junior Jerian Grant found senior Naji Hibbert under the game basket for the league-winning lay-in with 1.8 seconds left.
Clark Caps Cinderella Run
W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — With NVSHL Player of the Year Chris Bond
absent — due to club commitments — O’Connell caps its Cinderella run,
winning its first-ever NVSHL title over Forest Park, 6-5, on this
overtime goal by Knight sophomore Chris Clark.
HOLY Cross! W.C.A.C., Va./Md./D.C. — In the W.C.A.C. semifinals on Sunday with the score tied at 44, Holy Cross senior NaTasha Thames — 10 seconds after missing a pair of would-be go-ahead free throws — channels her inner Lorenzo Charles, and gets a leaping, buzzer-beating putback to lift her team over Seton.
Winbush … Winner Northern Region, Virginia — In the Northern Region semifinals with the score tied at 57, Hayfield junior Brandon Winbush
hits the game-winning 3-pointer with :03.2 seconds to defeat Mount
Vernon — who entered with a 19-game winning streak — and lift the
Hawks into the regional final and guarantee a berth in the state
tournament.
Broad Run to Region IILoudoun County, Virginia — Broad Run forward Will Field pulls down a rebound, whips an outlet pass to senior Breon Earl who drives in for the game-winner only to pass under the basket to junior
Kevin McGaughey, who bobbles and then puts it in to beat the buzzer for
a 53-52 win. The Spartans advanced to knock off regular-season champion Dominion
in the finals and earn a bye in the Region II quarterfinals and a home
semifinal date this week.
Different DeAndre, Same Drama
Loudoun County, Virginia — Dominion junior DeAndre Reaves — on a pass from senior DeAndre Albritton — hits a buzzer-beating, game-winning 3-pointer against Broad Run. The Titans won, 63-60.
Turning Dasilva Into Gold — Prince George’s County, Maryland — Parkdale wrestler Rafael Dasilva gets a reversal and an amazing pin to win his 215-pound match and clinch a 39-36 win over Bowie on January 31.

No. 10 — Different Steve, Same Stroke
Northern Region, Virginia — South Lakes senior Steve Kerr — who won the Northern Region 3-point shootout — hit this game-winning 3-pointer as time expired in overtime to beat rival Langley on the road, 61-58, on January 6.

No. 9 –Let Freedom Ring
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Entering Saturday, no Loudoun County high school had won a boys’ or
girls’ state basketball championship game. But in the 11 a.m. Virginia
AA Group 3 girls’ final, Freedom ended the slump. Eagle junior Kelsey Buchanan record a triple-double — 11 points, 21 rebounds and 10 blocks — in Freedom’s 58-33 win over Lee-Staunton on March 14.

No. 8 — Wilson Revenge
Northern Region, Virginia — Hayfield senior T.J. Wilson, after taking a fall in the dunk contest an hour prior, gives a facial to division rival and Lake Braddock senior Dom Morra in the final minute of the Beltway’s 88-76 win over the ‘Burbs in the 2009 DigitalSports Showcase on March 21.

T. No. 7 –Valvano, Vol. II

Northern Region, Virginia — Tied at 39 with rival Hayfield on January 26, Lake Braddock senior Dominic Morra drained the clock down for what was supposed to be the final shot. But senior Jared Watson tipped home Morra’s miss to vault the Bruins to a two-point home win over their district rivals. Check out Lake Braddock coach Brian Metress‘ Jim-Valvano moment, sprinting for someone to hug, after the buzzer-beating win.

T. No. 7 –
Swish Family Robinson
Prince William County, Virginia — Battlefield junior guard James Robinson drove the length of the floor, trailing by one point to Stonewall Jackson with the final seconds ticking away, and hit this fading jump shot in front of a raucous home gym in Haymarket on January 10.

No. 6 – Do You Believe in Life After Glove
Prince George’s County, Maryland — In the Maryland 2A State semifinal, Douglass freshman Kavon Glover
brought the crowd to its feet with this baseline steal, leap from
outside the paint and jam over a Wicomico would-be defender for a
dunk-and-one. The Eagles took out the Indians, 87-69, to reach the 2A
finals.

No. 5 –Olase-Wow
Montgomery County, Maryland — Springbrook senior Jamal Olasewere
finishes on the fast break through a Walter Johnson would-be
shot-blocker. Olasewere led the Blue Devils to a perfect 27-0
record, a 37-game winning streak and back-to-back 4A state titles, the first repeat since 1968.

No. 4 –Jordan For the Win … Got It!
Prince George’s County, Maryland  — With the score tied at 59 and :10.6 seconds on the clock, Bulldog senior Mike Ewii‘s potential game-winner rattles off. But junior teammate Kyle Jordan gathers the rebound and uses his finger tips to redirect the game-winning, buzzer-beating bucket through the net on February 9.

No. 3 –– P.G. Alley-Oops    1  2  3
Prince George’s County, Maryland — Gwynn Park guard Tion Coates is on the receiving end of two fourth-quarter alley-oops in the Yellow Jackets’ 73-51 over the Hornets and, from the P.G. County 4A vs. 3A/2A/1A Late All-Star Game, Bowie guard Alex Rodriguez tosses the ball off the glass to Duval forward Colin Beatty for a one-handed flush.

No. 2 –National Record for Fletcher
Northern Region, Virginia — Madison senior Sean Fletcher
broke the all-time national high-school record in the 100-yard
butterfly (:47.08) at the Virginia AAA State championships on Saturday.
Almost as impressively, he only had a seven-minute break until he
competed in the 100-yard freestyle final and was .02 second from
breaking the state record in that event. The original record holders
were Nate Dusing (Covington Catholic High School, Texas; University of Texas; 2000 and 2004 Olympics), who set the record in 1997, and Austin Staab (Westerville, Ohio; Stanford) tied it in 2007.

No. 1 — To All a Good Knight
S.M.A.C., Maryland — On January 7, Thomas Stone trailed Chopticon by two points with two seconds remaining. But Cougar guard Dytania Johnson launch an inbound pass to Stephen Battle beyond half-court, and he flipped it to Leron Knight for the buzzer-beating, game-winning, streak-sparking win, 63-62. Stone won the 4A East and finished 21-5 on the year.
