Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Brown Burns D
— Springbrook freshman attacker Micah Brown looks unassuming for a while
until hearing her shouts to burn her defender. Then, she turns on the jets,
cruising past several defenders before scoring. Springbrook won its
first game of the season, beating
Northwood, 12-6.
Madigan Diving Goal — Broad Run sophomore Ryan Madigan scores a sweet diving goal in the Spartans’ 19-7 win over the Pride on Thursday to clinch a fourth-straight, regular-season Dulles District title. Broad Run is the top-ranked AA team in Virginia on laxpower.com, having won 38 of its last 40 district games.
Williams Dials Long-Distance — Loudoun Valley senior pitcher Caroline Williams provided her own run support with this three-run home run — her seventh this season — against out-of-region foe Westfield. The Vikings beat the Bulldogs, 5-0, on Saturday.
Khalil Lights Lamp — Woodbridge junior Mohammad Khalil gets taken down as he pokes this cross from sophomore Andrew Whitlock passed the Gar-Field keeper to give the Vikings an early one-goal advantage. Scroll down for more from this game.
Renner Robbed by Lindemuth — Lake Braddock shortstop Ryan Lindemuth comes to the second-base side of the bag to scoop this soft grounder by West Springfield speedster Bryn Renner and fire to first to end the Spartan half of the sixth inning. West Springfield won, though, 5-1.
Clayton Does it All — Two minutes after Woodson senior Lindsey Ottavio gave the Cavaliers a one-goal lead, West Springfield senior Amalya Clayton breaks down the Cavalier defense and beats the goalkeeper on the near post to force a 1-1 draw between two of the top teams in the Northern Region.
Huntingtown Locks Up League — For four years, Leonardtown had reigned supreme over the
Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. But on Friday night, the torch
was officially passed. Huntingtown junior Ryan Johnston led the way with a
five-goal, three-assist night, senior Peter Athens had four and three and
senior Mike James put four in the net as the Hurricanes
knocked off the Raiders for the second time this year,17-5. It’s the first SMAC championship for the Huntingtown
program, in its fifth year of existence..
Brennan Game-Winner — The teams are tied at 9 and the fourth-quarter clock is ticking towards
the final couple of minutes, but Ryken senior Pat Brennan isn’t going
to have his Senior Day spoiled. He whips the shot up high into the net
to the Knights’ the lead and the 10-9 win. The win gives the Ryken
the No. 3 seed for the upcoming WCAC tournament..

No. 10 –Ferrick Walk-Off
Northern Region, Virginia
— Centreville trailed O’Connell, 2-0, entering the bottom half of the seventh inning. But two different Knight pitchers each yielded a bases-loaded walk to bring the Wildcats even at 2. Then, after a double-play, Centreville senior Jessica Ferrick stepped in with the bases loaded and two outs. Her walk-off single up the middle locked a 3-2 win for her dad — and coach — Rich Ferrick.

No. 9 –Hurricane Harley
S.M.A.C., Maryland
— Huntingtown trailed Patuxent by five runs through two innings on Monday, but chipped away to tie the game at 7 by the fifth on a double by junior Jessica Warner. The next batter, freshman Kassidy Taylor, put the Hurricanes in front on an RBI single. Then, in the sixth, junior Harley Hill put Huntington ahead for good, capping a 3-RBI day with a two-run single. The Hurricanes won, 11-7.

No. 8 — Titan First
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Entering 0-9 all-time in the series, Dominion trailed Heritage by four goals in the fourth quarter on Tuesday. But Titans scored the final five goals, all by Michael Fawkes and Zack Glascock — who combined to score 13 overall on the night — as Dominion clinched second place in the Dulles District and its first-ever win over Heritage, 15-14.

No. 7 –Cartagena Step, Painter’s Touch

Prince William County, Virginia
— Gar-Field fell behind, 2-0, to Woodbridge at halftime on Saturday, but was within one goal when it started this 67th-minute counterattack. Indian midfielder Santiago Canseco played striker Luis Cartagena who hit the post after a smooth stepover that caused a Viking to lose his footing. Gar-Field midfielder Alexander Painter drove home the rebound to earn the Indians a 2-2 draw.

No. 6 –Wright Stuff
Northern Region, Virginia — On Senior Night at Mount Vernon, Major senior John Wright netted a hat trick to lift the hosts over the Hawks, 3-1, including this athletic, running volley from the top of the penalty area. Wright has 15 goals on the season.

No. 5Kleess Louise
Northern Region, Virginia — After a successful, pre-game prom proposal, Stallion midfielder Max Kleess put South County on the board in the 17th minute against Lake Braddock with this perfectly-placed shot from outside the 18. But a 77th-minute strike by Bruin captain Emmanuel Kassim earned the road team the 1-1 draw on the Stallions’ Senior Night.

No. 4 –Na’Sayer
Independent Schools, Maryland
— With the IAC regular-season title on the line, Landon and Georgetown Prep were knotted at 5 with time winding down in regulation. But, with :22.9 seconds left, Bear junior Joseph Pauletta found senior Andrew Nagel for a game-winning, alley-oop goal. It ensured both Landon’s first-ever regular-season IAC title and its first-ever win against Prep.

No. 3 –Bay of Kicks
Northern Region, Virginia
— West Springfield junior striker Bayron Gudiel cemented a Spartan victory on the Cavaliers’ Senior Night with this one-touch turn and finesse shot over the Woodson keeper from 20 yards out. The former DC United Academy team member’s 52nd-minute strike locked up a 3-1 win for West Springfield.

No. 2 –Fever Mitch
S.M.A.C., Maryland — McDonough senior Melanie Mitchell pitched her second perfect game of the season last week against Leonardtown, but faced her biggest test yet in defending 3A state champion Northern — who averages nearly 10 runs per game — on Wednesday. Mitchell dazzled those in attendance with a 20-strikeout no-hitter. Ram senior Laura Borawski drove in Mitchell for the game’s only run as McDonough improved to 13-0 this year. Mitchell has all 13 wins and has allowed just one earned run.

No. 1 — Alligator Roll
Northern Region, Virginia
— Madison trailed unbeaten, fourth-ranked Langley 9-8 with :06.0 left when Warhawk middie Mike McCool had a good look at goal after a steal in the Saxon end. McCool’s shot was blocked but Madison middie Gordon Bailey scooped the loose ball with his back to the goal and — in one motion — rolled and flipped it through the Langley defense to tie the game and force overtime. The Warhawks won, 10-9, in overtime on a goal by attack Mike Hayden to deliver the Saxons their first loss. Madison dedicated the game ball to coach Rick Hodge‘s ailing mother, Margarita.
